Presentations

Sunday evening last saw an exceptionally large turnout of members for the presentation of prizes. Highlight of the evening was the conferring of honorary membership on club member Billy Donlon, an outstanding member of the Glenns, who represented Ireland on the senior team in the victorious Home Internationals in Scotland last September. At the presentation Captain Joe Slevin stressed that Billy had contributed much to Birr Golf Club both as a player, captain and administrator. He was an inspiration to all and was always available to represent the Club on every occasion.

In replying Billy thanked the members for this honour and was delighted to get an opportunity to thank the many members who had helped and encouraged him since he joined in 1979. He noted in particular Michael Coughlan and Michael Horan who gave him sound advice and helped him to develop and expand his game. He said he and his wife Marese and family would cherish the award and he looked forward to many more years of enjoyment in The Glenns.

The Captain and Lady Captain also welcomed Michael O’Grady and Brendan Swan from the One-Armed Golf Society. Both players represented Europe in the Fightmaster Trophy at Chepstow last September. This competition is run in conjunction with the Ryder Cup and follows a similar format. Competitions are now in progress to select a team for Chicago 2012. Both men spoke with deep affection of the late Bill Owens who represented Birr for many years on one-armed teams.

The Captain congratulated all the winners and thanked in particular our sponsors, Caroline McCarthy of  Sportswear, Birr, Hanlon Butchers, Castle St. and Hassett of  Topline, Crinkill and Banagher.
