Ladies golf
Birr Golf Club had the pleasure of hosting the Irish Senior Women’s Close Championships last week. The Championship consisted of 36 holes qualifying Stroke Play over Tuesday and Wednesday with the 16 lowest scores over the 36 holes qualified for the final stages and the 16 lowest scores of those who did not qualified progress to the match play stages.
2015 champion Gertie McMullen (The Island) retained her title after a 2&1 win over East Berkshire's Laura Webb. It was a tight match between both competitors but McMullen always had the edge, before closing out the match on the 17th with a 25- foot birdie putt.
McMullen saw off her semi-final opponent Margaret McAuliffe (Ballybunion) on the 14th, as did Webb against her fellow semi-finalist Maria O'Reilly (Headfort).
The Plate was contested between Kate Evans (Royal Co. Down Ladies) and Sheena McElroy (Grange). McElroy gained a one hole lead early in the match but a determined Evans had her sights set on the Shirley McDonald Plate Trophy and she fought back to ensure a 2&1 win.
McElroy posted a convincing win over Nenagh's Catherine Bird in the morning semi-final, winning 6&5. It was a tighter affair for Evans and Catherine Reilly (The Heath) as the match finished in favour of Evans.
The Club would like to wish Gemma Butler the best of luck this week as she captains the International Girls team in Oslo for the second consecutive year.
