80 Year Old Mystery
Some time ago the club was contacted by an antique dealer in Stuggart, Germany who had a small silver cup for sale inscribed “Birr Golf Club Ladies Cup 1934”. Francie Horan arranged for the purchase of the cup and we would now like to source any information relating to it. The first lady captain on record in the club was Mrs. E. Burbage in 1935. Was this a captain’s prize from the previous year? How did it end up in Germany? Please share this post to spread the word – you never know!
The picture shows the incoming officers of the club with the cup – Captain Sean Moylan, President Tom Rigney, Lady Captain Theresa Fealy and Lady President Aileen Watkins

Welcome to Birr Golf Club
Welcome to the official website of Birr Golf Club. The club was founded in 1893 and is situated in County Offaly, in the heart of Ireland.
The course has been carved out of natural woodland and eskers and provides a strong challenge for even the most accomplished golfers. Undulating fairways, ridges, hills and hollows represent the nearest inland equivalent to the links courses around our coast.
You are sure of a warm welcome from both the staff and members as our Golf club is noted for it's hospitality. We are an ideal choice for societies and visitors alike. Our clubhouse has an excellent restaurant and bar and can cater for any occasion.
As we are located in the heart of Ireland you are never too far away to drop in for a game or a relaxing meal. We are within a short drive of all major air and sea terminals. A well stocked golf shop and a driving range are located adjacent to the entrance. There are a number of fine hotels and guest houses in the locality, details of which can be found on our visitors page
We look forward to your visit and are sure you will enjoy your time with us
Birr Golf Club Awarded National Standard

Birr Golf Club is delighted to be one of 32 golf clubs who are the first to be awarded under the new Failte Ireland National Standards Framework which was developed in conjunction with the Golf Quality Assurance Group. These standards are the first of their kind for golf clubs in Ireland.
By choosing our golf course, you can be assured of high standards in facilities and customer services. Introduced by Fáilte Ireland in 2010, Ireland is the first country to undertake a nationwide quality assurance scheme of this type for golf courses. If you’re searching for a golf club that will have great services and facilities for visitors, you’ll be glad to know that Birr Golf Club is quality assured by Fáilte Ireland. It’s an independent assessment of what you can expect to find when choosing a golf course. The scheme is based on the overall quality, but also takes facilities into account.
